Eukaryotic pre-mRNAs undergo extensive processing after transcription but before translation (Figure 3). For clarity, this module’s discussion of transcription and translation in eukaryotes will use the term “mRNAs” to describe only the mature, processed molecules that are ready to be translated.

tRNA “reads” the mRNA strand and “translates” it into a chain of amino acids (a protein). If you think you’re ready to discuss transcription and translation on the AP® Biology Exam, take a stab at this quick practice question: In the Transcription and translation section, select Enable transcription and translation for auto-generating captions. Organizers can select up to six languages for transcription and translation. Attendees will be able to select the language they want when they watch the broadcast. Transcription is the process of copying a segment of DNA into RNA. The segments of DNA transcribed into RNA molecules that can encode proteins are said to produce messenger RNA. Other segments of DNA are copied into RNA molecules called non-coding RNAs. Averaged over multiple cell types in a given tissue, the quantity of mRNA is more than 10 times the quantity of ncRNA. The general preponderance of mRNA in cells is valid even though less than 2% of the human genome can be

Transcription occurs as a prerequisite for translation and occurs when there is a need for a particular gene product at a specific time for a specific tissue. Only one strand of DNA, called the template strand, is replicated during transcription, and the resulting RNA strands are single-stranded messenger RNA (mRNA). Transcription occurs in the nucleus in eukaryotic organisms, while translation occurs in the cytoplasm and endoplasmic reticulum. Both processes occur in the cytoplasm in prokaryotes.

Once the mRNA molecule has been transcribed, it is sent to the ribosome in the cytoplasm or endoplasmic reticulum for translation. The protein is formed from the polypeptides, which are built up at the ribosomes. The ribosomes move along the mRNA the ‘read’ the code, beginning at the start codon.

Whenever cells divide, they need to make an extra copy of their DNA through DNA replication. DNA gives our cells the ‘instructions’ to make proteins - the things which do the work in our cells and include enzymes, hormones and channel proteins.

Transcription and translation

Definitions. Transcription is the process of making an RNA copy of a gene sequence. This copy, called a messenger RNA (mRNA) molecule, leaves the cell nucleus and enters the cytoplasm, where it directs the synthesis of the protein, which it encodes. The first step in transforming the genetic content of DNA into proteins is called transcription.

Eukaryotic pre-mRNA processing. Practice: Transcription. Next lesson. Translation. Transcription-translation coupling is a mechanism of gene expression regulation in which synthesis of an mRNA (transcription) is affected by its concurrent decoding (translation). In prokaryotes, mRNAs are translated while they are transcribed. This allows communication between RNA polymerase, the multisubunit enzyme that catalyzes transcription, and the ribosome, which catalyzes translation. It is one of the first processes in gene expression.
